Some Of My Friends

Music: Imagine (John Lennon)

 Happy Melinda

When you become a teenager, you need a lot of friends to talk to about things that your Mom and Dad might not understand (like the words on your favorite band's new CD, that cute guy who was on Chicago Hope last night, and sometimes even your innermost feelings and fears that might make your family even more sad if they knew about them).

Because I was diagnosed with cancer just before I went into high school, some of my old friends drifted away to new and exciting things (when you're 13 or 14 and going into high school, almost everything is new and exciting). It wasn't that they didn't care, it was just that I wasn't allowed visitors for such a long time, and when I was, I wasn't well enough to visit or talk for very long.

During my time in the hospital I met lots of kids who had cancer. Most of them were very young and very scared, so when I was able, I talked to them and tried to make them feel at least a little bit more comfortable and secure. Over the months, some of them died, and that always made me feel very sad. I still try to meet at least one newly diagnosed Cancer Kid each time I have to go into the hospital, and everyone of them will remain my special friends forever.

When I began to feel a little better, we started to go out to the track where my brother races his car, and before long I began to make some new friends from the outside world. Now, not only my old friends, but also my Cancer Kid friends and my new friends call me all the time, and when I am able, I even go to stay at some of their houses for a day or two.

This page will introduce you to just a few of my friends (some of them are too shy to appear on the Internet!)

My Friend Matt

Matt is 16 years old and he lives in Langley BC. He drives Quarter Midget race cars as a member of the Langley Quarter Midget Assocation. We met about 3 years ago, and have been good friends ever since. I visit his home quite often, and he and his family have all helped me and my family a great deal over the past several months.

My Friend Lindsay

Here is a picture of my friend Lindsay who is currently 3 years old. We shared a room together at the Children's Hospital for almost 2 months. Everyone used to say that we looked like sisters with our bald heads and brown eyes! What do you think?

Lindsay was diagnosed with Wilms Tumor in the spring of 1994 and remained under treatment until July of 1995.

She is VERY clever for her age and I talk with her on the telephone at least once every week. Her Mom, Kathy, is also a good friend of both me and my Mom (you have to become friends when you eat, sleep, laugh, cry, and pray for each others kids together in the same small room for 2 months!) Kathy and Lindsay have been very kind to me and are always there to cheer me up when I sometimes get sad.

My Friend Shilo

Shilo is 16 and he also drives a race car. He lives in Abbotsford BC. His mother, Christine, and his dad, Doug, have been very supportive during my illness, and Shilo has been a good friend.

My Friend Kayla

My friend Kayla (now aged 6) lives on a small island just off the coast of BC. She was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease in 1994, and is now finished with her treatments.

She is currently a happy kindergarten student, and we write to each other all the time. We also exchange Christmas, Easter, and birthday cards (and even small presents every now and then).

Melinda's Logo My Friend Michael

Michael's Picture

Michael, currently aged 11, was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease in August of 1994. After treatment he was able to return to school and get on with his life, which included acting in TV and movies, and singing.

Unfortunately, in June of 1995 Michael relapsed. This time treatment was much worse for him as he had to have a stem cell transplant in the summer and was very sick. This picture of Michael and I was actually taken in the isolation room where Michael received his transplant.

Michael is now finished treatment and has once again returned to school. He is having fun with his many friends and is once again singing and looking for new acting assignments.

Dad's Note: Michael played a very successful role in a movie named "2GE+HER", and in a TV series with the same title. His Charitable Foundation has raised more than $3 million dollars to help find a cure for childhood cancer. Check out his webpage.

Michael's Album Cover

Above is the front cover from Michael's recent CD release (which is dedicated to Melinda). If you can find the album, buy it - it's really great!

My Friend Beth

September 19th, 1996

Melinda was the best friend anyone could ever have and want. She touched lives of the many who knew her. She touched them with her warm smile and her cheerful personality. Melinda meant the world to me. Even though we were separated by three provinces, we remained close friends over the ten years I knew her. I realized how much I cared for her as a friend over the last two and a half years, I realized how much I would miss her when she was gone.

Melinda and I met one summer many years ago when she was visiting family here in Winnipeg. It just so happened that her relatives were my neighbors. I was playing in my back yard and she walked up her Papa's driveway. I walked over and we started talking and playing. From that moment on, we were best friends. Since she lived in Vancouver, she had to go back when the summer came to a close. We still remained friends by writing letters. Our friendship grew even stronger than before when she told me she had cancer because I realized how important she was to me and I was scared of losing her. My only wish was that I could take away her pain and give her my strength. In my opinion, I don't think it was fair for her to die at such a young age but for a young person she accomplished a lot. We can't change the path God has chosen for her, we can only pray that she is safe and happy in the hands of God.

This is from my heart and I just want to say, " Melinda, we loved you, we always will and even though you are gone, you will stay in our hearts forever."

Lots and lots of love for now, forever and always, your best friend here on earth and in Heaven someday:

Elizabeth (Beth)

My Friend Arthur

Arthur and I shared a room many times when we were in the Children's hospital. He has finished his treatments now, but he is still suffering some side effects from the large doses of chemotherapy that he received.

Arthur was 5 months old when he was first diagnosed with cancer. He is now almost 3 years old, and has a new baby sister who is named after one of our favorite nurses, Monica.

My Friend Joe

Joe is 15 years old and he lives in Maple Ridge BC. He races against my brother Michael in the "B" Modified class and he also drives a 1/2 midget race car in the alcohol fuel class. This year, Joe was elected as the president of the Langley Quarter Midget Association Driver's Club.

Joe can be quite charming, and he always seems to have a gaggle of girls around him.

My Friend Cindy

Cindy is a young girl that I met at the race track. We spend a lot of time together, playing, talking, and just enjoying each others company. She also loves to ride with me on my wheelchair.

She is very sweet, and I think that we are both learning some lessons from each other.

My Friend Lyndsay

Lyndsay was diagnosed with a brain tumor in the summer of 1994. I always tried to visit with her when we were both in the hospital, or when I came back to the clinic for one of my many check-ups. One of the things that she liked the most was "Knock Knock" jokes, so her Mom and Dad were always on the lookout for new ones to keep her amused. She also loved to go shopping at Safeway with her Mom.

My Mom and Lyndsay's Mom got to be quite close friends, and they sometimes spend hours talking together on the telephone. Lyndsay's Dad is a very highly ranked martial arts expert.

Lyndsay passed away on May 12th 1996. She would have been 5 years old on July 2nd 1996.

I miss her and her crooked little smile.

My Friend Gillian

Hi, my name is Gillian and I am 5 years old. I was three when my Mummy and Daddy told me I had leukemia and I met Melinda a few weeks after that. Melinda was my friend and also was my Mum's friend. She helped Mum understand some of the things I was feeling and she was always there with a friendly smile.

When I was sick in hospital at Easter she brought me two lovely bracelets and we had a nice visit. She met Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen and she sent me a picture of them because I like them also.

I was very sick in August of this year and so was Melinda but Mummy told me that everyday she asked about me. When I was still in I.C.U. Melinda went to Canuck Place but before she left she sent me a present. I have a lovely little stuffed dog named Barley and a happy face ring to make me smile. I went to see her twice at Canuck Place and we had nice little visits and I was happy to be there. I told my Mummy not to be sad when Melinda dies because I know she will be in Heaven playing with Rachel , Lyndsay and Stephanie and my Grandad and also my dog Nikki. I know she will be happy because nobody is sick in Heaven.

My Cousin Elizabeth

Elizabeth is 10 years old, and lives in Edmonton, Alberta. She is a first cousin on my Mom's side of the family.

My Mom and I have been to Edmonton twice to visit with her and my Mom's sister, and both times we had a lot of fun. This picture was taken in the West Edmonton Mall, which isn't just a mall at all. It has lots of great things like a wonderful theme hotel, a skating rink, a giant roller coaster, a wave pool, submarine rides, and lots more - all right inside of the mall! And, oh yes, it even has a few stores as well!

Elizabeth and I have always been very close, and many of the clothes that I outgrow are passed down to her. Some people say that we are very much alike in a lot of ways.

Hi Elizabeth.

My Friend Jill

Jill and Melinda met on the Net, and exchanged several messages back and forth during the few months when they could. Jill's alias on the Net was "Jilly Gorilly", named after a toy gorilla called "Jilly" that a friend gave her during one of her many stays in the hospital.

Jill had leukemia, and was somewhat of a cancer activist, with many friends and admirers from all over the world. A visit to the "Jilly Gorilly" Webpage will let you read about this multi-talented young woman, and will also give you some idea about just how quickly and unexpectadly a cancer relapse can strike.

Sadly, she passed away on October 19th 1996 after being married to a very wonderful man for only one short year.

My Friend Jule

Jule was probably Melinda's best friend on the Net. They met when they were both Discussion Managers on the Sick Kids mailing list, and were soon chatting back and forth at a great rate, even though Jule lived in Australia! As DM's, they not only gave hope, love and caring to each other, but also to dozens of other seriously sick children from around the world.

Although her webpage is no longer on the Internet, our investigations have turned up a book that was written about Jules life. It is titled "A Time For Dancing" and you can read some reviews on the book, and even purchase it if you wish, from the Amazon.ca

We were very saddened to hear that, after a four year battle with her cancer, Jule passed away at the age of 18.

We love you Jule.
